North Wales has a reputation as one of the best mountain biking destinations in the country, and on this adventure weekend you’ll experience some of the most amazing MTB trails on offer in Snowdonia, we’ve chosen some of the best.

Our MTB leaders will assess the conditions on the day and will select the routes from which you will get the best thrills and most memorable rides. We’ll be most likely to select from trails around Pont Scethin, Llyn Cowlyd, Conwy Mountain and perhaps a link of trails and byways around Gwydir Mawr (originally known as the Marin Trail). Saturday will be a big day out with some initial work on skills and then we’ll move on to a bigger trail. Sunday will put those new skills in to good use and we’ll take on another big trail.

Pont Scethin
This wild mountain biking route (rather than a purpose built trail) is set amongst the mouth-watering scenery of the south western flanks of the Rhinogydd mountain range, the riding is good and the views are exceptional; particularly out along the coastal fringe to the west and southwards down to the Mawddach Estuary and Cadair Idris. Following the old winter and summer pack-horse routes in the mountains behind Barmouth, in Southern Snowdonia, the ‘Pont Scethin’ loop is a classic mountain bike route in the area, with some big climbs, stunning views and technical rocky descending.

Llyn Cowlyd
Amongst the wild valleys of northern Snowdonia and with some wonderful views over some of Wales’s highest mountains this area offers trails that are just mountain bike heaven. Ascents offer sections of single track that wend their way around the mountainside with tricky but user-friendly warm-ups for tougher tracks to come.

With a good few miles of technical, rocky riding along the edge of Llyn Cowlyd and on forest roads that sneak easily past Llyn Crafnant, there are climbs that gain a steep-sided vantage point high above Capel Curig. Then it’s rough and tumble singletrack all the way to the finish with enough twists and turns to keep you alert.

Conwy Mountain
Conwy has more than its fair share of mountain biking trails that will challenge both the novice and the experienced rider. The terrain offers big climbs as the ground rises towards the Snowdonian mountains, forest roads, and single track courses across moorland and through forests.

Gwydir Mawr (Marin Trail)
The Gwydir Mawr mountain bike trail is one of the MTB ‘musts’ of North Wales. Formerly known as the Marin Trail, it is a proper mountain bike trail in every sense of the term. Big climbs, big descents, brilliant singletrack and truly awesome scenery make this a trail to remember.

Most, but not all, of the climbs are on forest roads and tracks giving you time to take in the views of the mountains of Snowdonia, and descents are on fantastic singletrack. The singletack varies from tight, technical and rocky to wonderfully open and flowing, from dark forest to exposed ridgelines.

Friday:
Meet the rest of your group and your guide at our Lodge. Enjoy a hearty two course dinner, a few drinks and plenty of relaxed banter, while we confirm some riding plans for the next two days.

Saturday:
A big cooked breakfast – you’re going to need it – and we’ll then load the bikes onto the trailer and hop on the bus for a short drive to the trailhead. We have a few options, depending on the group and the conditions, but the main aim will be some classic trails. They’ll be plenty of time available to work on skills, and no shortage of advice available – these sessions are usually very beneficial. Exhausted and no doubt muddy, we’ll head back to the Lodge for tea, coffee (this place has wonderful coffee) and some homemade cakes and time for a hot shower. Saturday night is usually the highlight of the whole weekend with more tasty food and plenty of chat around the table about the day’s events.

Sunday:
Another hearty breakfast and we’re off. Today we’ll be looking to complete a big ride, hopefully incorporating everything we learned on Saturday, with some big climbs, stunning views and technical rocky descending. This’ll be a good days riding and by the end of it we’ll have really justified the word ‘mountain’ in mountain biking. The bus will take us back to the Lodge for tea, coffee and cake followed by a quick round up of the day and the weekend and time to rest a little before your trip home.

Note: whenever possible, the routes we ride will be based on the group’s preferences and abilities although the weather on the day and trail conditions can also affect this.

This is a 'Mountain Biking' weekend.

Please refer to the 'Mountain Biking' section on the 'What kit do I need?' page.

This weekend will include a couple of big days, with some huge ascents and at least one big descent. There are a few sections that are harder than the average trail centre ‘black’ graded trail, but these sections can be walked. If you don’t mind a bit of walking (up and down) and are happy on ‘red’ trails, you’ll have a great time.

Remember, the plan is to work on skills and tactics on the Saturday and then tackle a large ride on the Sunday. If you have any concerns about your ability or fitness, please get in touch.

With over 15 years’ experience of route research, working for MBR magazine and writing various guidebooks, Tom, our lead guide, has probably explored more trails than anyone else in the country.

He has been awarded British Cycling MTB Leader Level 3 – the highest award available in the UK and is also a qualified Mountain Leader (MLS).

Mountains and mountain biking are a way of life for Tom, who is a self-confessed bike geek, map geek and lover of wild places. He is probably best-known as a guidebook writer and the man behind MBR magazine’s pull-out route guides, but his passion and infectious enthusiasm have also made him a much sought after guide and instructor. You’ll be in the best of hands with Tom leading the group.
